The horrors of being entombed, alive, and stuggling against infections caused by the overwhelming humidity and lack of fresh air, has to be a foreign concept to the most of our readers.  However, to the trapped 33 Chilean miners, it is a reality and a stuggle with daily life in the collapsed mine that has become their home for the next several months.

Chileans fled to the streets on Friday following the most powerful aftershock in six days.  Evacuations had to take place by doctors who moved patients from a major hospital , due to the aftershocks.  Chile is still trying to fully comprehend the scope of this disaster that hit them.

The death toll in the earthquake stricken area of Chile, near Concepcion, has now risen past 700.  Although the casualties are not of the same magnitude as those of Port au Prince, troops have been dispatched to Concepcion to keep law and order

A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale has hit Chile this morning.  The quake is about 150 km South West of Santiago, Chile.  The death toll is rising constantly.  The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports that to this point at least 78 people have been killed.  This is the most powerful quake that has hit Chile in 15 years.

Chile said Friday that tests show swine flu has jumped to birds, opening a new chapter in the global epidemic.

Top flu and animal-health experts with the United Nations in Rome and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were monitoring the situation closely, but said the infected turkeys have suffered only mild effects, easing concern about a potentially dangerous development.
