Euthanasia, which is illegal in Canada and a criminal offense, will be on the radar next week in Quebec. The Canadian Press reports that a committee of Quebec politicians has heard from experts on the subject and will now hear from the public on this controversial issue. The discussion will include both assisted suicide and euthanasia. At present Euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Assisted suicide is legal in Belgium and three U.S. states, under strict conditions.
With the arrival of the MV Sun Sea in Canadian waters last month, there is an increasing belief that human smuggling, especially from Sri Lank is considerable problem. The MV Sun Sea had 459 Tamils on board. The Canadian Government is considering measures that would combat human smuggling.
A few weeks ago senior RCMP officers voiced complaints of the leadership style of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner William Elliott. The Government tasked former Canadian Security Intelligence Service Chief to complete an independent workplace assessment. The Globe and Mail reports that the Harper Government has dismissed the complaints. This decision, will require a major shake up in the RCMP to maintain harmony.
Alberta has been fighting a battle to mitigate both advertising and the reputation of the Alberta Oil Sands. Environmentalists and the U.S. Administration, including members of Congress have shown their distaste toward the Alberta Oil Sands. Alberta's Premier Ed Stelmach is scheduled to meet with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, next Wednesday in Ottawa. The meeting is at the request of the Speaker.
For days meteorologists across North America have been watching Hurricane Earl and have made predictions based on computer models of where and with what impact Earl would hit. Earl made a shift slightly to the East and major destruction was avoided along the Easter Seaboard. Earl has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm and now Canada's Maritimes are anxiously awaiting Earl.
